Antioxidant is a term that refers to a series of biochemical organic molecules and substances that can be used to prevent cancer, heart ailments, stroke, neurological disease and many other illnesses related to natural aging. They specifically do so by eliminating the harmful free radicals that are created within the person’s body through normal metabolism.
These antioxidants includes Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vitamin A, selenium (a mineral) and a group of biomolecules known as carotenoids, including the popular Beta-carotene.
Free radicals (highly reactive oxygen molecules) are created in the normal oxidative biochemical process within your body and are very promiscuous molecules, reacting with cellular elements including DNA and other cell structures. Antioxidants are supposed to inhibit damage by these molecules and thus prevent diseases.
It is possible that older adults, people with low or reduced food intake, frequent aspirin users, heavy drinkers, people that smoke and people with immune issues benefit greatly by ingesting daily antioxidant supplements.
The normal human body produces many antioxidant enzymes, some of these are glutathione peroxidase, SOD (Superoxide dismutase) and catalase, these maintain the oxidative process at an optimum level. Supplementing these enzymes via oral administration does not have much support, a better method could be to supplementing the elements the body needs to metabolize them such as zinc, copper, manganese.
A list of antioxidants (enzymes, vitamins, minerals and organic molecules, foods) includes:
SOD
Glutathione Peroxidase
Catalase
Tocopherols and tocotrienols (Vitamin E)
Vitamin C
Melatonin
Resveratrol (Polyphenol)
Lutein
Lycopene
Vitamin B2
Coenzyme Q10
Cysteine
Carotenoids
Fruits and vegetables are a very good source of antioxidants, Vitamin C: Fruits and vegetables; Vitamin E: Vegetable oils; Polyphenolic antioxidants: tea, coffee, soy, fruit, olive oil, chocolate, cinnamon, oregano and red wine; Carotenoids (lycopene and carotenes): fruits and vegetables.
Though it may be tempting, do not ingest antioxidant supplements without proper guidance as some may actually harm you if you ingest too large a dose.
